The standard model of cosmology assumes GR as the theory to describe gravity on all scales. In 1998, astronomers made the surprising discovery that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating, not slowing down. This late-time acceleration of the Universe has become the most challenging problem in theoretical physics. Within the framework of GR, the acceleration would originate from an unknown dark energy. Alternatively, it could be that there is no dark energy and GR itself is in error on cosmological scales. The standard model of cosmology is based on a huge extrapolation of our limited knowledge of gravity. This discovery of the late time acceleration of the Universe may require us to revise the theory of gravity and the standard model of cosmology based on GR. We will review recent progress in constructing modified gravity models as an alternative to dark energy and developing cosmological tests of gravity.", "revisions": [ { "version": "v1", "updated": "2015-04-17T20:00:48.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "keywords": [ "cosmological tests", "standard model", "unknown dark energy", "cosmology assumes gr", "late time acceleration" ], "tags": [ "review article" ], "publication": { "doi": "10.1088/0034-4885/79/4/046902", "journal": "Reports on Progress in Physics", "year": 2016, "month": "Apr", "volume": 79, "number": 4, "pages": "046902" }, "note": { "typesetting": "TeX", "pages": 80, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "adsabs": "2016RPPh...79d6902K", "inspire": 1362135 } } }
