The results for observables differ substantially from the corresponding calculations in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory (HB$\\chi$PT), most appreciably in the forward kinematics. We verify that the covariant $p^3$ result fulfills the forward-Compton-scattering sum rules. We also explore the effect of the $\\Delta$(1232) resonance at order $p^4/\\varDelta$, with $\\varDelta\\approx 300$ MeV, the resonance excitation energy. We find that the substantial effect of the $\\Delta$-excitation on the nucleon polarizabilities can naturally be accommodated in the manifestly covariant calculation.", "revisions": [ { "version": "v2", "updated": "2008-12-16T19:02:24.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "subjects": [ "13.60.Fz", "25.20.Dc", "14.20.Dh" ], "keywords": [ "manifestly-covariant chiral pt calculation", "nucleon compton scattering", "covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory" ], "tags": [ "journal article" ], "publication": { "journal": "Soviet Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics Letters", "year": 2009, "month": "Apr", "volume": 89, "number": 3, "pages": 108 }, "note": { "typesetting": "RevTeX", "pages": 6, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "inspire": 782244, "adsabs": "2009JETPL..89..108L" } } }
